Family considerations play a big part in consumers’ decisions to buy long term care insurance, according to results of new survey commissioned by Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company.

About 41% of the LTC insurance purchasers surveyed said their main reason for buying coverage was to avoid being a burden on their family, according to Mutual of Omaha, Omaha, Neb.

The survey team found that 65% of the survey participants had talked about LTC coverage with family members, and 53% said family members were involved in their decisions to buy LTC insurance.

Although 78% of the participants reported having a family member who had needed nursing home or home health care, 39% said they believed the biggest risk of their purchase was the possibility that they might never use their benefits.
