Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company has introduced a group voluntary critical illness product that could protect insureds who end up with more than one separate severe illness.

Colonial Life, Columbia, S.C., which operates as Colonial Supplemental Insurance, says the new policy can include coverage for one illness category that includes heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery; a second category that includes transplants resulting from the failure of major organs other than the heart; and a third category that includes cancer.

The policy will pay the full benefit 2 or 3 times if an insured suffers a critical illness in one coverage category, then goes on to suffer critical illnesses in one or two of the other coverage categories.

Workers also can pay for an optional recurrence benefit that can pay for a recurrence of the same critical illness, according to Colonial Life, a unit of UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn.

The policy also includes a wellness benefit that can help holders pay for 1 of 20 screening tests, such as a bone marrow test or a virtual colonoscopy.
