Health savings account administration fees vary widely.[@@]

Great Lakes HSA, Cleveland, an HSA administrator that is trying to promote its own HSA administration services, has published a chart that compares first-year HSA administration costs for its own HSA operation and 10 other major HSA providers.

Total first-year fees can range from $25 per year to about $85 per year, Great Lakes says.

Providers often charge start-up fees that can range from $25 to $75 per account along with monthly service fees that can amount to a total of about $25 to $70 per year, Great Lakes says.

The typical provider also charges $1 to $2 per check or other transaction, Great Lakes says.

Great Lakes notes that administration of an HSA is more complicated than administration of a normal bank account because a good provider supplies transaction codes that can help customers show that their HSA transactions qualified for HSA tax breaks.
