May 27, 2004 — John Hancock Financial Services Inc. appointed James Shepherdson chairman and chief executive officer of its mutual funds unit.

Shepherdson replaces Maureen Ford Goldfarb, who had been chief executive of John Hancock Funds since January 2000. Goldfarb had said she would leave the company following the completion of its acquisition by Canadian insurer Manulife Financial Corp.

The funds unit managed $30.2 billion in assets at the end of March.

Shepherdson, who is known as Jaime, had been responsible for the sales and marketing of Hancock’s non-proprietary annuity products since joining the company in 2003. Previously, he was co-CEO of MetLife Investors Group, a subsidiary of MetLife Inc. (MET).
