NU Online News Service, April 21, 2004, 3:52 p.m. EDT – Many health plans are auditing their pharmacy benefit managers.[@@]

Evergreen Re Inc., Stuart, Fla., a health reinsurance brokerage, says 64% of the 50 regional health plans it surveyed have audited their PBMs in the past year.

About half of the plans say PBMs could be doing more to help them control drug costs, Evergreen reports.

Only 12% of plans surveyed have held increases in drug costs to 8% or less, and 30% of the plans are suffering through increases of 16% to 20%, Evergreen says.

The majority of the plans that participated in the survey are seeing cost trends in the 9% to 15% range.
