NU Online News Service, Oct. 8, 2003, 11:12 a.m. EST – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Boston, will hold a special statewide open enrollment from Oct. 15 to Dec. 31 for its Medicare supplement health insurance plans.

If consumers buy Medigap coverage during the open enrollment, the coverage will take effect Jan. 1, 2004.

If consumers wait until the regular open enrollment period, which starts in February 2004, coverage will not take effect until June 1, 2004, Massachusetts Blue says.

The monthly statewide premiums for Massachusetts Blue Medigap plans are $499.70 for the nonprofit company’s Medex Gold plan, $139.23 for its Medex Bronze plan and $84.37 for its Medex Core plan.

The company is introducing a fourth plan, Medex Core Plus, that will cost $157.24 per month. The new plan will fill in many gaps in basic Medicare coverage and also include limited prescription drug benefits and preventive medical benefits, Massachusetts Blue says.
