NU Online News Service, Dec. 10, 11:23 a.m. – The American Association of Preferred Provider Organizations, Washington, says three health quality organizations have now developed what amount to universal credentialing standards for PPOs.

Researchers once focused on developing accreditation programs and quality measurement programs for the more tightly managed health maintenance organizations, but they have developed similar programs for PPOs in recent years.

The three main quality groups are URAC, Washington; the National Committee for Quality Assurance, Washington; and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

“AAPPO congratulates URAC, NCQA and JCAHO for their adoption of universal credentialing policies,” AAPPO Chairman Joseph Driscoll says in a statement about the groups’ efforts. “This collaboration of accrediting organizations represents a monumental step towards our shared goals of quality health care and maximized resources.”
