NU Online News Service, Sept. 26, 12:10 p.m. – Humana Inc., Louisville, Ky., says it believes a test of its new SmartSuite consumer-driven health program on 10,000 of its own employees and dependents saved it $2 million for the 12-month period ending in June.

Humana had expected claims costs to increase 19% for the employees and dependents, but the consumer-driven program helped hold the increase to 4.9%, Humana estimates.

The SmartSuite program gives employees the ability to choose from a menu of six plan designs that offer a variety of deductible and co-payment levels.

One plan design, the Humana CoverageFirst plan, lets employees choose an unusually high deductible in exchange for unusually low monthly premiums.
