NU Online News Service, Aug. 21, 1:16 p.m. – The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Chicago, has awarded Swiss Medical S.A., Buenos Aires, Argentina, the rights to use the Blue Cross and Blue Shield names and trademarks in Uruguay.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Delaware, Wilmington, Del., started a small Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan in Uruguay in 1994, but it recently sold the plan to Swiss Medical.

Swiss Medical already has 300,000 members in Argentina, enough to make it the second largest private health insurance company in Argentina.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association is a nonprofit organization that controls the rights to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield names and trademarks. It has 44 U.S. member companies.
