MassMutual Names Sustainability Head: Personnel Moves

The company wants to keep its investments from increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company — a Springfield, Massachusetts-based life insurer with about $313 billion in insurance company assets — has picked Ying Yu to help it try to make the world a better place.

Yu will hold the newly created title of head of sustainability. She will oversee MassMutual’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts.

The life insurance company announced earlier this year that it hopes to reduce the net impact of its investments on the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere to 0 by 2050. Yu will be in charge of that effort, MassMutual said.

She previously was in charge of sustainability strategy at Prologis, a real estate investment trust with $148 billion in real estate assets.

Yu started out as a television news anchor in China, and then began to work as a software engineer in the United States in 1999. She began to get involved with sustainability at Bose Corp., when she was in charge of improving the company’s supply chain strategy. She moved from that role, to become Bose’s head of sustainability, from 2012 through 2020.

Yu has a bachelor’s degree from Shandong University and a master’s degree in computer science from Central Connecticut State University.

MassMutual also has named Julieta Sinisgalli to succeed Todd Picken, who has retired, as treasurer. Sinisgalli previously was an executive in MassMutual’s finance organization.

She has a bachelor’s degree in business from the Universidad Católica Argentina Buenos Aires.

In other personnel moves:

Lincoln Financial Group has named Elena French to be head of corporate marketing, communications and brand. French, who is a senior vice president at Lincoln, previously was the company’s head of corporate communications.

She has a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University.

LL Global — the parent of LIMRA, LOMA and the Secure Retirement Institute — has hired Janine Epright to be chief financial officer. She previously was the chief financial officer for the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut and Mohegan Holding Company.

She has a bachelor’s degree in business from Western New England University and a master’s degree in business from the University of New Haven. She holds the Certified Public Accountant professional designation.

Humana has named Susan Diamond to be chief financial officer. Diamond, who has been working as the company’s interim CFO, previously was president of the company’s home business segment.

She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bellarmine University.

AmeriHealth Caritas has hired Dr. Karen Amstutz, a pediatrician, to be its chief medical officer.

AmeriHealth Caritas runs Medicaid plans and other government-backed health plans.

Amstutz previously was vice president of community and behavioral health at Indiana University Health. She also has been a chief medical officer at Magellan and an executive at Anthem.

She has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University and a medical degree from Washington University, She has a master’s degree in business from the University of Chicago.
