Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) insurers are legally mandated to cover colonoscopies without charging patients. The procedure, when billed as preventative cannot charge patients a copay but some doctors may bill it is a diagnostic test. It is important to clarify with your doctor before the procedure is performed, how it will be defined and reimbursed.
