Texas Partnership Program Kicks Off LTC Seminar Series

The Texas Long-Term Care Partnership program is working with advocates of private long-term care insurance (LTCI) to offer a series of 5 free public LTCI awareness seminars in Texas starting today.

The 3in4 Association, Kirland, Wash., is working to offer the seminar together with the Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

The final seminar in the initial series is set to take place July 23.

The Texas Long-Term Care Partnership program gives Texas residents an incentive to plan for long-term care (LTC) expenses and consider buying private LTCI coverage, by easing Medicaid nursing home benefits eligibility requirements for residents who buy qualified private LTCI coverage and then exhaust the private LTCI benefits.

The 3in4 Association is the group sending Marion Somers, an elder care specialist with a doctorate in gerontology, around the country in a vintage Greyhound bus for the 3in4 Need More campaign. The campaign promotes the idea that about three-quarters of U.S. adults want more information about LTC planning, and that many Americans need to do a better job of preparing for LTC expenses.

News of the 3in4 Association’s new relationship with the Texas Long-Term Care Partnership program surfaced in June. Texas Partnership program officials have talked about the possibility of supporting 3in4 Association efforts to promote LTC planning in other states as well as in Texas.

Seminar organizers have promoted the events through direct mail and public relations efforts, according to Honey Leveen, a Houston LTCI agent who aspires to be the “LTCi queen” and is working closely with the 3in4 Association.

The association’s 3in4 campaign “considers itself to be ‘the Switzerland of LTC Industry,’” Leveen says in a statement about the seminars. “It does not promote any specific carrier, product or agency, but educates on products and services that should be considered by a consumer for plan design…. It’s long been my dream that one day, the public would understand that the need for responsible LTC planning is as important as the need to own medical insurance.”
