On June 29, New York Life announced that six students received the New York Life Award, part of the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a recognition program for teenage artists and writers in the US.

The awards, facilitated by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers were founded in 1923 and are one of the longest-running programs of its kind, having affected millions of students over the years.

The genesis of the New York Life Award was a $50,000 contribution by the New York Life Foundation, the charitable arm of The New York Life Insurance Company to the Alliance in 2011.

In keeping with the New York Life Foundations’ focus on bereavement and loss, a subject that the foundation finds overlooked and under-addressed, in order to receive the New York Life Award, teens in grades 7 through 12 had to submit work that dealt with loss and grieving in a certain capacity. Each of the New York Life Award winners received a $1,000 scholarship. From over 7,000 submissions, six were picked.

Throughout the 2012 school year, a travelling exhibit will continue to display Award-winning work all over the country beginning in Detroit this fall.
