The winners of the Third Annual Community Leadership Awards were presented September 30 in New York in a gala celebration which belied the difficult financial world that advisors and their clients have experienced over the past year, but celebrates those advisors who continued performing good work within and for their communities despite that difficulty. Sponsored by the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation, which was founded by LPL Financial, and is led by its president, Kandis Bates, and by Investment News, the Awards recognize four individuals or groups from more than (this year) 400 nominees who come from across the industry and the nation. (Ms. Bates is also the executive VP for corporate communication at LPL, but nominees need not be affiliated with LPL in any way, and LPL is not involved in the judging).
The winners were chosen by judges including Kevin Keller of the CFP Board, Dale Brown of FSI, and advisors Richard Salmen of the FPA and Tom Orecchio and Nick Nicolette of NAPFA and FPA. Showing the strength of the Foundation’s fund raising even in a difficult year, the winners are to receive $12,500 each, rather than the standard $10,000, while the finalists will receive $2,500 each, rather than the standard $500. The winners are:
Mentoring Excellence Award: Brett Ellen, American Financial Network, in Calabasas, California, for both his Turn Kindness On Helpin Hands, that he founded for his youngest sons, and a financial blog for children and parents at kidsfinancecoach.com.
