Older adults enjoying "gentler" recession

  • 56% — Percentage of seniors who say they suffered no losses in the recession; 5 percent say they lost more than 40 percent of their assets.
  • 12% — Percentage of seniors who cut back spending on alcohol or cigarettes, compared with 31 percent of people younger than 64.
  • 10% — Percentage of seniors who canceled cable service or switched to a cheaper cell phone plan, compared with one-quarter of younger respondents.
  • 5% — Percentage of seniors who have started sharing a home with a friend or relative; 1 percent have rented out a room.
