When stress impinges on your worklife–whether it emanates from work or from home–it can force you into your less functional, primitive survival mode. To return more easily to your peak thriving mode, try this conscious process:

First, step back and reflect on the situation. What’s causing your stress? Is it intensified by echoes from the past? Then make time for self-soothing therapies that have help you chill out in the past. This needn’t be a single technique; it may be a combination of stress-busting activities, reaching out to loved ones, and other forms of support.

For more ways to relieve anxiety and tension, see “The Present, Tense” in the November 2004 issue of Investment Advisor. And good luck in the journey toward mastering stress!
