Chuck Akre is portfolio manager of the FBR Small Cap Fund, and founded his firm, Akre Capital Management (ACM), in 1989. He currently manages about $2 billion in assets. Akre was an employee of FBR at the time the fund started, and has managing FBR Small Cap since its inception. After separating ACM from FBR at the end of 1999, Akre’s firm became sub-advisor to the fund. Previously, Akre was director of research at Johnston, Lemon, and CEO of its asset management division.

A graduate of American University in Washington, D.C., Akre has an English literature BA. He lives on a farm in Virgina’s horse country, where he says he is involved with horses and likes the quiet, and maintains his office in another rural town with “one traffic light, about four or five places to have lunch, or get your prescriptions filled, or have your saddle fixed.”
