Anthem Reports Higher 4th Quarter Net Income

NU Online News Service, Feb. 6, 6:01 p.m. – Anthem Inc., Indianapolis, is reporting $88 million in net income for the fourth quarter of 2001 on $2.6 billion in operating revenue, up from $72 million in net income on $2.3 billion in operating revenue for the fourth quarter of 2000.

The company was providing or administering major medical coverage for 7.9 million U.S. residents at the end of 2001, up from 7.3 million a year earlier.

Average revenue per fully insured member increased to $626, from $553.

Although at least one managed care company has reported seeing signs of a shift back to insured medical health plans, away from self-funded plans, enrollment in self-funded plans increased 16% at Anthem, to 4.1 million, while enrollment in the company’s insured plans increased only 1%, to 3.8 million.
