A $125 million advisory team, including a former NFL star, was just caught by Associated Financial Consultants & Investor Services, the firm recently announced. Shawn Wooden, former Miami Dolphins safety and University of Notre Dame graduate, comes to the group with Travis Ruane, a retirement plan specialist.

With the addition of the two advisors, South Florida-based Associated Investor Services will oversee more than $926 million in assets with 26 employees. The firm, founded in 1972, is among the top five largest independent offices in the nation registered with Investacorp, a subsidiary of Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services.

Leveraging his 14 years in the advisory business and nine years in the NFL, Wooden will play a significant role with the firm’s Sports & Entertainment Division, launched in 2017. He previously worked with Ruane at Principal as a managing director.

Ruane, with eight years in the business, graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and received an MBA in business and sport management from Barry University in 2011.

“Our mindset is expansion,” said Associated President Paul Vladem, in a statement. “We’re taking what we’ve built over the past 40 years, the positive impact on clients and the community, and looking to continue that for many generations to come. We’re further positioning ourselves as a force within the independent space for the foreseeable future.”

Not only did Wooden rack up 281 tackles, five interceptions and two forced fumbles during his pro career, today he is president of the Miami Dolphins Alumni Advisory. He also was one of the two lead plaintiffs for the NFL concussion case.
