Approximately 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s, according to estimates from the Alzheimer’s Association. Of those who reach the age of 85, nearly one in two will get it. And many boomers are dealing with the realities of Alzheimer’s already, as they care for parents suffering from the disease. Some Thanksgiving tips for caretakers:
- Reminisce about past Thanksgivings, but don’t begin your memories with, “Do you remember when …” Instead, say “Wasn’t it fun when we …”
- Make sure there is a place for the person with dementia to rest if he or she feels overwhelmed.
- Limit the number of people at the meal to avoid confusion or frustration.
- Fill your home with pleasant, traditional, soothing aromas.
