The Montana State University Extension program has worked with state government officials to create a fact sheet for Montana residents who are considering participating in the state’s long-term care (LTC) partnership program.

A partnership program gives participants who exhaust private long-term care insurance (LTCI) benefits and apply for Medicaid nursing home benefits the ability to keep some assets and still qualify for Medicaid.

Experts have estimated that about 70% of state residents ages 65 and older will need some LTC during their lifetime, university extension officials say.

The extension partnership program covers topics such as what LTCI coverage is, how the Montana partnership program works, and how to determine how much to spend on coverage.

The authors write, for example, that the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Kansas City, Mo., has recommended that consumers spend no more than 7% of their income on LTCI coverage.

The authors say 13 insurers are on the Montana Commission of Securities and Insurance list of companies that sell partnership policies in Montana.
