The need to be connected is very basic in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the psychological theory that explains the largest and most fundamental human desires. But only since the dawn of the digital age has it become possible to stay connected all of the time. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to completely isolate yourself and allow your mind to wander and churn big questions without interruption.  This “creative pause” is the seed of the break-through “a-ha!” moments. The few places that force us to unplug, such as the shower, won’t be that way much longer. Anyone who wants to disconnect will have to learn to be proactive in creating isolated spaces, and once there, will need to develop the capacity to use it and protect it.
