Half of all American workers spend about $1,000 on coffee a year and 66% spend about $2,000 on lunch, according to a survey by the placement firm Accounting Principals. Broken down by month, $250 earning 5% would save $208,065 after 30 years. The same amount earning 10% would be $565,122. The Account Principals survey found workers ages 18 to 34 spend an average of $44.78 a week on lunch, $31.80 for workers 45 and up. A few tips to save money on lunch: Shop for discounted gift certificates online, keep an eye out for deals on restaurants, organize pot lucks with co-workers, and—of course—bring your lunch. Consider having the money you save each month automatically transferred to your savings or investment account.
