Unum Group, Chattanooga, Tenn. (NYSE: UNM), has named Kevin P. McCarthy the company’s chief operating officer, effective Jan. 1. The company says that McCarthy will maintain his role as president and chief executive officer of its largest business unit, Unum US.

McCarthy was appointed earlier this year to lead Unum’s Enterprise Operating Committee, which focuses on positioning its businesses to capitalize on growth opportunities and better leverage companywide resources.

Separately, Great-West Retirement Services, a business unit of Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company Greenwood Village, Colo., has appointed Amy Heyel vice president of government markets and client Relations for the company’s eastern region.

Heyel will be responsible for client relations and plan management of the government markets business in the region. She reports to Brent Neese, Great-West’s vice president of government markets.

Previously, Great-West says, Heyel was a vice president at Segal Advisors, where she spent 15 years as an investment consultant to plan sponsors, overseeing retirement programs. She also held roles at investment management and research firms.

Great-West Retirement Services also appointed Steven Bresler director of retirement plan counseling for government markets. Bresler will be responsible field participant services for the government markets business, including strategic direction, sales, staffing, and training. Great-West says that Bresler will also report to Neese.

Previously, Bresler was a regional vice president with The Hartford Financial Services Group. He also held management roles serving government and nonprofit markets at Prudential Financial, ING Financial Services, and CitiStreet.

Most recently, Great-West says, he was a co-founder and managing partner of Financial Soundings, a small business providing qualified plan participants with managed account advice.
