The Missouri Department of Insurance says scam artists are using the federal health reform initiative to try to fool Missouri consumers into buying fake health insurance.

A door-to-door salesman claiming to be a federal agent selling insurance under the new law has approached at least one St. Louis-area consumer, according to Missouri Department of Insurance Director John Huff.

Anyone who is claiming to work for the federal government and offering an insurance product is a fraud, Huff says.

The Missouri department is asking consumers to call the department at (800) 726-7390 to verify whether they are dealing with legitimate carriers and legitimate agents of legitimate carriers.
