The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has developed an insurance department resources report which covers topics such as how many workers each department has and how those workers are paid.

In addition to staffing, the 22nd edition of the Insurance Department Resources Report, based on 2008 data, provides detailed information about insurance department budgeting and funding, examination and oversight activities, producer population sizes, and consumer services and antifraud activities.

In the salary range section, for example, the NAIC, Kansas City, Mo., reports that the lowest salary for an insurance department lawyer included in the salary range table is 35,400. The top salary for an insurance department lawyer appears to be $147,385.

Elsewhere, the NAIC reports that participating insurance departments employ a total of 578 complaint investigators, ranging from no individuals with that title in Washington state and several territories, up to a high of 63 in New York state.
