Douglas Wheeler will succeed Donald Bryan as director of the New Jersey Division of Insurance Tuesday.

Bryan is retiring.

Wheeler, who has been the acting director since March, was nominated to fill the post in May by Gov. Jon Corzine, D, and confirmed by the New Jersey Senate June 25.

Steven Goldman continues to be commissioner of the division’s parent entity, the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Wheeler, 37, has a law degree from Seton Hall University.

He became assistant commissioner for legislative and regulatory affairs at the banking and insurance department in 2002, and he became the department’s chief of staff in 2005.

Wheeler later was general counsel of National Atlantic Holdings Corp., Freehold, N.J., the parent of Proformance Insurance Company.
