The U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging will hold a hearing June 3 on long term care insurance.

The hearings will examine “the high and rising costs of long term care as America’s population ages at an unprecedented rate,” according to an announcement from committee chairman Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wisc.).

The hearings will consider the extent to which more consumer protection and greater disclosures are needed from LTC insurance companies, the announcement says. Also on the agenda: whether states are pushing LTC partnership policies “despite questions that have arisen about the financial viability of some long term care insurance carriers,” according to Kohl’s announcement.

Among experts expected to testify at the hearing are Diane Rowland, executive vice president, Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation; Sean Dilweg, Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner; Carol Cutter, Chief Deputy Insurance Commissioner of Indiana; Thomas M. Stinson, president, Genworth Long Term Care, Genworth Financial Inc.; and Bonnie Burns, training and policy specialist, California Health Advocates.
