Another health insurer has agreed to contribute to the effort to start a competitor to UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s Ingenix health care price data service.

Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York, has resolved the concerns of New York Attorney Andrew Cuomo by agreeing to stop using Ingenix data to price health plan members' out-of-network physician claims, and also to contribute $500,000 to an effort to start a new, nonprofit physician rate database.

Cuomo has argued that use of faulty Ingenix data led to insurers' using unrealistically low figures to estimate what reasonable physician charges ought to be.

Insurers now have agreed to contribute a total of about $90 million to the database project, Cuomo says.
