U.S. household ownership of mutual funds and other U.S.-registered investment companies increased slightly in 2008 to 45.6 percent, representing approximately 53 million U.S. households, according to the Investment Company Institute. Mutual funds continued to be the most common type of investment company owned, with more than 52 million U.S. households holding mutual funds in 2008.
"2008 marked the fifth consecutive year of growth in mutual fund-owning households," says Sarah Holden, ICI Senior Director of Retirement and Investor Research. "The survey finds about 4 million investors were added to mutual fund ownership ranks in 2008-up to 92 million from 88.2 million in 2007."
