Unum Group Corp. says 46% of its group long term care claimants are under the age of 65 at the time of disability.

Unum, Chattanooga, Tenn., published that finding in a review of the long term care insurance landscape.

For all group LTC claimants, the average age of an individual filing a claim was 66. For claimants under age 65, the average was 53, and 6% of the group LTC claimants were under age 45.

The average length of a Unum group LTC claim in the under 65 age group was 31 months, the company reports.

About 66% of the group LTC claimants received care at home, while 13% received care in a nursing home.

Unum says it processed just over 1,000 LTC claims and paid about $16 million in benefits in 2007.
