Unum: Pregnancy, Cancer Lead Disability Causes

Cancer and complications from pregnancy were the top causes of long term disability claims filed with Unum Group Corp. in 2007.

Normal pregnancy was the leading cause of short term disability claims at Unum, Chattanooga, Tenn., the company says.

Cancer and pregnancy complications each accounted for about 12% of Unum’s group LTD claims in 2007.

Back injuries caused 11% of the LTD claims, and other injuries caused 9.3% of the claims.

On the group STD side, normal pregnancy caused 21% of the claims.

Injuries other than back injuries triggered 10% of the claims; digestive-intestinal diseases, 7%; and back injuries, 6%.

Although the number of cancer claims filed in 2007 was 16% higher than the number filed in 2006, improved treatments led to improved return-to-work rates for those diagnosed with the disease, Unum says.

The return-to-work rate increased 77% for STD claimants with cancer and 24% for LTD claimants with cancer.

Unum received about 400,000 new disability claims in 2007 and paid $4.3 billion in disability benefits.
