The top 3 reasons consumers filed formal complaints against their insurance companies in 2007 were delays, denials of claims and unsatisfactory settlement offers.

Officials at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kansas City, Mo., has published that information in an analysis of state complaint data filed with the Complaint Database System.

States can report “closed” complaints to the CDS on a voluntary basis.

For CDS purposes, a closed complaint is a complaint that has been investigated and resolved to the satisfaction of the state or jurisdiction in which it is filed.

The system now stores houses data on about 2 million complaints.

States reported 222,814 consumer complaints to the CDS in 2007.
