Ed Slott: First, I love what I do. Without that commitment and passion I could not possibly keep the travel schedule that I do. I love to meet advisors and hear their success stories. I know many of them personally and see them numerous times a year in all parts of the country. I love to hear how they used what they learned in my program to help a client, a beneficiary and in turn, truly earn new business. It makes advisors feel great, and me too. I love to see the confidence that advisors build when they start using the planning strategies we teach them.

But most of all, what keeps me going is simply the ability to challenge the status quo and transform the retirement industry by creating a new breed of competent advisors that consumers can rely on for their financial security.

Most consumers have low expectations of their advisors because they are unaware of the truly fantastic opportunities available to retain, grow and pass on their retirement savings by capitalizing on the numerous benefits buried in the tax code. Most advisors are unaware of these as well. I am on a mission to educate the consumer to expect more from their advisors and to educate the advisors to earn the business.

These are the advisors of the future. These advisors will own this multi-trillion dollar IRA rollover market. Our firm is a leader in creating competent IRA specialists and making them known and available to the tens of millions of consumers who are learning to expect only the best trained advisors.

In the end, everyone wins, but only if the consumer is the ultimate winner, and that is my goal. When that happens, the advisors will also win by attracting new business from the newly educated consumer. The only loser will be the government and, of course, the advisors who do not step up now and take advantage of this incredible opportunity to serve real client planning needs and, in turn, watch their business grow like never before, for all the right reasons.

Watching this transformation as it is now happening and actually seeing it take root is totally amazing and keeps me going. I know that I am making a difference not only in the lives of the advisors, but in the financial security their clients and their clients’ children and grandchildren will enjoy for generations.

Editor’s note: Senior Market Advisor did an exclusive interview with New York-based CPA Ed Slott, often regarded as the nation’s foremost IRA authority, for the October issue of the magazine. Here, Slott shares his thoughts on what keeps him motivated, an answer that did not appear in the print article.
