American College Names Barton President

NU Online News Service, June 10, 2003, 6:03 p.m. EDT – The American College, Bryn Mawr, Pa., has hired Laurence Barton to be its president and chief executive officer.

Barton, who has a doctorate in public affairs and international communications from Boston University, will succeed Samuel Weese, who is stepping down after serving as president of The American College for 15 years.

Barton previously was president of Heald College, which has 11 campuses in California, Oregon and Hawaii. He also has been president of DeVry University in Phoenix; a professor of management and business at Pennsylvania State University Graduate Center at Great Valley; and a full-time lecturer in management communications at the Harvard Business School.

In the late 1990s, Barton was vice president of communications and public affairs at Motorola Inc., Schaumburg, Ill. At Motorola, Barton managed regional teams in London, Geneva, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
