NU Online News Service, Dec. 13, 10:22 a.m. – Aetna Inc., Hartford, is now selling a fully insured defined-contribution health plan, the Aetna HealthFund product, in Maine.

The plan is the first fully insured defined-contribution plan approved for sale in Maine, Aetna says.

The plan combines traditional health insurance with employer-funded accounts that employees can use to pay for care from the health care providers of their choice. Participants can carry over any funds left in the accounts at the end of the year to the following year.

The plan also provides “first-dollar” coverage for preventive services, such as annual physicals, mammograms and well-child care.

Aetna began selling a version of the plan for large, self-insured employers in September 2001. The new, fully insured version is available to employers with as few as 51 eligible employees, Aetna says. Aetna has received permission to sell it in 38 states and the District of Columbia.
