NU Online News Service, Nov. 11, 9:25 a.m. – The California HealthCare Foundation, Oakland, Calif., has published a report that attempts to show just how much the cost of health coverage sold in California varies from plan to plan.
The nonprofit group found that an average, healthy 44-year-old living in Los Angeles could be paying as little as $69 per month for coverage and as much as $573, depending on the type of health plan chosen.
For comprehensive health maintenance organization coverage, the monthly cost ranges from $187 to $305, and for a preferred provider plan with a $1,500 deductible, the monthly cost ranges from $187 to $202.
Group researchers looked at plans offered earlier this year by five large carriers in six urban and rural California counties. The researchers report that, in each county studied, the most expensive coverage option is about seven to 11 times as expensive as the least expensive.
