NU Online News Service, Dec. 14, 4:03 p.m. – The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is getting ready to announce the insurer, or insurers, that will supply the coverage for the new Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program.

The announcement could come as early as next week, a spokesman says.

OPM hopes to make voluntary, employee-paid coverage available to 20 million military personnel, federal employees, retirees and dependents starting Oct. 1, 2002.

Other public and private insurance programs already make individual LTC coverage available to federal employees and dependents, but supporters of the OPM program say OPM could give the private LTC insurance market a boost by using its clout to educate eligible consumers about the concept.

OPM posts regular updates about its LTC program on its Web site, at http://www.opm.gov/insure/ltc/index.htm
