NU Online News Service, July 11, 12:33 p.m. – BenefitsXML Inc., Glastonburgy, Conn., is rolling out BriXML, a tool that employers, insurers and others involved with employee benefits can use to use and share employee data.

The BriXML product includes a vocabulary of codes for identifying each of the many different types of data in an employee information database, and a “metadictionary” that can be used to put information from different kinds of databases in the same format, or translate the information from one format to another.

The vocabulary includes codes for information about employees’ identities, employees’ dependents, benefits brokers, benefits eligibility rules, and employees’ participation in health, life, disability and pension programs.

BriXML is based on XML, an international standard for developing database translation programs.

Several nonprofit groups are also trying to develop XML-based vocabularies of employee data codes. BenefitsXML has designed its product so that purchasers can adapt to changes in XML standards by switching to new XML vocabularies, the company says.
