Of the 847 U.S.-listed stocks Morningstar analysts cover, some recorded significant losses in 2022, while others were big winners. Jakir Hossain, a Morningstar associate markets data journalist, wrote in a blog post this week that 237 stocks rose last year, while 610 fell. Among the latter, 369 stocks declined by 20% or more, compared with 64 stocks that fell by that much in 2021. Fewer stocks posted solid gains last year than the year before, Hossain noted. Only 105 names in Morningstar analysts' coverage rose by 20% or more, compared with 435 stocks that did so in 2021. The bear market punished both consumer cyclical and technology shares last year, including a handful of internet retail companies that were among the worst performers. Among the winners in 2022 were energy stocks that surged on the back of rising oil prices, and Chinese stocks, which rebounded from huge losses the year before.
