Agent Wins Democratic Insurance Commissioner Runoff in Georgia

Janice Laws Robinson is set to face off against John King, the Republican incumbent, in November.

Janice Laws Robinson, an independent insurance agent who sells life insurance and annuities, is now set to be the Democratic candidate for insurance commissioner in Georgia.

Robinson won a runoff election Tuesday against Raphael Baker. She received 64% of the 248,331 votes cast, according to data from state election officials.

Robinson was also Georgia’s Democratic nominee for commissioner in 2018.

Robinson’s Background

Robinson started out in insurance as a senior sales account representative with Liberty Mutual in 2003.

She later sold life insurance, along with auto insurance and homeowners insurance, for MetLife, State Farm and Nationwide.

She launched her own agency, J. Laws & Associates, in the Atlanta area in 2014.

The agency sells life insurance and annuities as well as health insurance, property and casualty products, and voluntary benefits.

The Republican Candidate

Robinson’s opponent will be the incumbent commissioner, John King.

King is a major general in the U.S. National Guard, and he has worked in law enforcement for decades.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, appointed him to replace Jim Beck.

Beck won the 2018 election for commissioner, but he lost his post in 2019, after he was convicted of fraud and money laundering in connection with complaints about how he ran the Georgia Underwriting Association from 2013 through 2018.

The association sells property and liability insurance to property owners who cannot qualify to buy coverage from ordinary insurers.
