What You Need to Know

  • Francois Duguay, chief actuary at Optimum Re Insurance Co., is taking over as board chair from Byron Allen.
  • Steve Shaffer will be the 2022 LIC vice chair, and Tony Mravle will be the secretary.
  • Executives who are active in LIC and attended an annual meeting appear optimistic about their companies' prospects.

Francois Duguay is taking over from Byron Allen as the chair of the LOMA Life Insurers Council (LIC) advisory board for 2022.

Duguay is the chief actuary at Optimum Re Insurance Co., a Dallas-based arm of the Optimum Group of Montreal. The reinsurer is best known for its life insurance and critical illness insurance operations.

Duguay has been an LIC officer since 2020.

Steve Shaffer will be the 2022 LIC vice chair, and Tony Mravle will be the secretary.

LIC provides networking and educational opportunities for senior managers at small and midsize life insurers.

LIC is an arm of LOMA, which, in turn, is part of LL Global. LL Global is the umbrella organization for LIMRA as well as for LOMA.

The group recently attracted about 75 top-level executives to an in-person annual meeting and conference in Orlando, Florida.

The executives who are active in LIC appear to be optimistic about their companies’ prospects.

When a session leader conducted an instant attendee poll and asked how 2022 profitability might compare with 2021 results, 50% predicted that profitability would be about the same this year as in 2021, 44% predicted that it would be somewhat better and 6% predicted that it would be significantly better.
