This Life Insurance Awareness Month Is Different

Ida, COVID-19 and the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks are all showing why personal protection insurance matters.

Life Happens started the 2021 Life Insurance Awareness Month campaign today with plenty to talk about.

The Arlington, Virginia-based nonprofit group has worked to spread the awareness message by developing a marketing guide and a pre-recorded webinar for agents and brokers

Life Happens also has brought in Kelly Rowland — a former member of the group Destiny’s Child and a coach on the show The Voice Australia — to be the spokesperson for the new campaign.

In one video for the campaign, Rowland says having life insurance tells the insured’s family, “I love you, I’ve got you and I’m seeing to your future no matter what.”

In another video, Rowland says she first understood the value of life insurance while talking to a friend who had suddenly lost her husband.

Meanwhile, the agents, brokers, life insurance company marketing executives and other people supporting the campaign can point to three dramatic examples of the importance of personal protection insurance: natural disasters like Hurricane Ida and the Caldor Fire, the COVID-19 pandemic and observances of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Life Happens has been organizing the awareness campaigns since 2004.

LIMRA’s Awareness Month Video

LIMRA talks about the emotion surrounding the 2021 awareness month campaign in the introduction to a new awareness month video.

“If there is one thing we’ve learned through the pandemic, it’s that life is fragile and it’s important to prepare for the unexpected,” LIMRA says. “Our hope is that this heightened awareness will encourage more Americans to get the life insurance coverage they need.

Chantel Bonneau, a Northwestern Mutual wealth management advisor in the video, says clients need life insurance to make sure their plans will work not only in the best case scenario, but also in the worst case scenario.

“So many of us have people that rely on us,” Bonneau says. “Have children that count on the income that we’re making today to fulfill the needs long-term.

Jason Jones, a financial advisor with MassMutual, says he tells clients, “You’re young, you’re healthy, you need life insurance. … And I’ll remind them that Noah didn’t build the Ark when it was raining. It always breaks my heart when I hear that someone has passed away, and their friends or family have set up a GoFundMe page. GoFundMe is not an insurance company. The best policy to have is the policy that’s in place the day after you die.”
