Q4 Life, Health and Annuity Earnings Calendar

COVID-19 mortality increased. One question is whether that will matter to earnings.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. may have provided a preview of the new round of earnings releases last Wednesday, when it reported that COVID-19 had cut net income for the fourth quarter of 2020 to $2.4 billion, from $3.5 billion for the fourth quarter of 2019.

Life insurers that were talking about the lack of impact from pandemic-related claims on results for the first and second quarters talked less about the that impact when going over third-quarter results.

Publicly traded life and annuity issuers, and most health insurers, start posting fourth-quarter results this week.

One question will be whether interest rates have started to increase enough to provide much relief for yield-started life insurer portfolio managers.

Another will be whether COVID-19 mortality among people with life insurance continues to be considerably lower than mortality for the general adult population.

Ryan Krueger, a securities analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, has suggested in a recent commentary that many life insurers will continue to benefit from a pandemic-related drop in travel and entertainment costs, and lower incentive compensation accruals.

He expects to see strong sales of registered index-linked annuities, and a continuing shift away from variable annuities with guarantees.

Here’s a list that gives each insurer’s anticipated earnings release date, along with the “stock symbol” the company uses to identify itself to investors. (This list will be updated over the next few days, as more earnings release dates come in.) Click on the stock symbol to see the company’s SEC filing page. Companies post their earnings releases on the SEC’s website. They also post other documents and resources in the investor relations sections on their own websites.
