Nationwide is an example of a life insurer that’s figuring out how to reconcile life insurance underwriting with the new COVID-19 “stay at home” rules.

The company talked about stay-at-home underwriting considerations last week, in a life insurance business COVID-19 service update.

The company noted that most of its own employees, aside from some involved with tasks such as policy mailing, are working at home.

When Nationwide created the service update, paramedical examiners could still conduct exams in person in some states, but not in others.

For applicants in the lockdown states, Nationwide is updating its underwriting process to waive requirements for labs, exams and collection of medical records from applicants who qualify for the standard risk class, the company said.

“We are rapidly implementing solutions that will provide alternate sources of underwriting data in lieu of labs, exams and medical records,” the company said.

The company may also accept client-provided personal health records and recent exam results, the company said.
