New York Foundation Gives $1 Million to Children's Grief Support Center
The center plans to use the money to help expand a program that has been serving about 500 children per month in the Portland, Oregon, area.
The New York Life Foundation says it will be giving $1 million to The Dougy Center, the national Center for Grieving Children & Families — a Portland, Oregon-based nonprofit that runs support groups for grieving children and teens.
The Dougy Center will use the grant to expand online training programs for the people involved with the grief support efforts, to create a training manual and other materials, and to create four scholarships for volunteers who want to attend the center’s in-person summer training program.
The center now provides peer support groups that serve about 500 children and about 350 adult family members in the Portland area each month, according to the New York Life Foundation.
In October, the foundation announced that it was turning its own Grief-Sensitive Schools Initiative pilot program into a national program.
