Independent broker-dealer American Portfolios Financial services says it recently wrapped up its 16th annual national conference, Connections 2017. Held in Uncasville, Connecticut, the event drew about 800 affiliated investment professionals from Oct. 25 to 27.
At the gathering, the IBD rolled out its new technology platform: HomePort, which serves as the central location from which all proprietary and integrated web services can be accessed. It includes model management, commissions, compliance and practice management, for instance, and was highlighted along with a full suite of web-based business solutions.
“This was our best conference yet,” said Tim O’Grady, president of sales and new business development, in a statement. Those attending have “come away with lots of great information and tools to bring back to their practices and put into effect immediately.”
Speakers included CEO Lon T. Dolber, who discussed the impact of client longevity. As life longevity increases, Dolber said, there are “more demands to help investing clients outlive their money [and] the financial services industry is facing continuous downward pricing pressures on the services it provides.”
Dolber explained how “living all-in at 100 basis points or less by creating operating leverage — not only for the broker-dealer, but also its valued customers and their practices through its philosophy of platform and technology independence — will be the key to having scalable and sustainable businesses.”
Also speaking at the gathering were former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, financial services mentor Don Connelly; Senior Investment Strategist Brian Levitt of OppenheimerFunds and Pension Resource Institute CEO Jason Roberts.
Along with tech developments and education, The Center for Discovery — a major research and specialty center that offers residential, medical and special education programs — was also in the spotlight at the conference. For the past 10 years, teams from American Portfolios and World T.E.A.M. Sports have worked with the center to provide extraordinary experiences for disabled athletes through the Adventure Team Challenge program.
At the recent conference, the Center for Discovery unveiled indieGo, an innovative power mobility device that turns any manual wheelchair into a power wheelchair. The group also recognized Dolber as its 2018 honoree for his unwavering dedication to its activities.
In addition, American Portfolios celebrated its third consecutive win of Investment Advisor’s Broker-Dealer of the Year award, which it received in September.
It also recognized its employee of the year, top producers and managers, and the overall business successes of other colleagues, a number of whom have been with the firm since its inception in September 2001.
