When innocently asked if investing in Europe is risky, David Marcus, CEO of Evermore Global Advisors and portfolio manager for its value fund (EVGBX), responds by saying "everything's risky."
However, he says in this video interview that since he runs a global fund that "can go anywhere in the world, anywhere in the capital structure," that makes Evermore "pure opportunitsts" who focus on finding stocks in special situations–breakups, restructurings, turnarounds. Europe's slow exit from its crisis has created "unbelievable" opportunities, he says. "We're in Europe in such a big way because that's where the opportunities are," Marcus argues.
Specifically, Evermore looks for European companies that have "gone on a diet." Since they've "thinned out the corporate waistline," he says, "over time their earnings can explode."
