Chunk down that goal

Sometimes our biggest life goals can seem overwhelming. We struggle to see them as a series of small, achievable tasks, but breaking down a large goal into smaller chunks and accomplishing them one at a time is exactly how big goals are achieved.

Once you’ve decided what you really want and set down specific deadlines, you can identify the individual action steps you will need to take in order to make your big dream come true.

How to chunk it down. There are several ways to identify the action steps you need to take to accomplish your goal. The first is to consult others who have already accomplished it and ask them which steps they took. They should be able to tell you the necessary steps as well as advise you on pitfalls to avoid. A second way is to purchase a book or manual outlining the process.

A third way is to start from the end and look backward. Simply close your eyes and imagine you have already achieved your goal. Then look back to see the path you took to your goal. What was the last thing you did? And what was before that and before that? Continue until you can see the first step in your mind.

Remember that it’s okay not to know how to do something. And it’s okay to ask for guidance from those who do know. Sometimes you can get it free, and sometimes you must pay for it. Get used to asking questions such as “Can you tell me how to go about…?” and “What would I have to do to…?” and “How did you…?”

And ask yourself some questions. What do I need to do? How much money do I need to save or raise? What new skills do I need to learn? Whose help do I need to enlist? What new disciplines or habits do I need to build into my life?

Keep researching and asking until you have created a realistic action plan to get you from where you are now to where you want to be.
