It’s time to get creative about sales

I am constantly amazed by the complete lack of creativity displayed by some salespeople. Salespeople are the extreme athletes of the business world, and yet for some reason too many of us just plod along the same well-trodden path. The problem with doing what everyone else does is that it’s boring and will take you only so far. Pulling away from the pack requires creativity.

I assure you that the majority of salespeople in the president’s club didn’t do things the way everyone else did. Instead, they got creative. Being creative means doing something other people haven’t thought of. It means pushing the envelope. It means looking at sales problems from a totally different angle.

Being creative means not accepting traditional results. Top salespeople get creative because they want more and don’t want to settle for the grass the rest of the herd eats. Do you want to be eating the same grass as everyone else?

Here are four ways you can get creative starting today:

1.    Have the courage to be different. It takes guts to be creative. Your approach can’t be like everyone else’s, and that’s the point.

2.    Broaden your awareness of your environment, your products and your customers. Creativity requires that you know more than the herd.

3.    Switch up your environment. Position yourself in new and different places. Change inspires ideas. Read books, blogs and industry magazines outside your normal routine.

4.    Accept that anything is possible. If you start with “It can’t be done,” then you’re right—and the game is lost. You’ve got to believe that there are opportunities out there.

Being creative means making a commitment to do things differently. Why eat the same grass as everyone else? It’s a big field—break from the herd!
